Artist Instructor Angela Lavender is back with a returning seasonal favourite Kids' Creation Club course! In this unique offering, young artists will experiment with a variety of mixed media techniques and tools while exploring themes of environmental sustainability and protection. They will engage in the creative re-use process, making art with single-use items while also learning painting, drawing, layering, and other artistic techniques. Through their art they will explore everything from ecosystems to keystone species, reflecting on the challenges facing our earth and how we can help protect it!

Things to bring (optional):

  • If participants wish to contribute to our classroom stash of reusable items that will be used for this course, please save and bring in any of the following: bubble wrap, bread tags, plastic bottle caps, elastics, gum packs, plastic straws, candy wrappers, cardboard.
  • If they already have an art journal or sketchbook that they'd like to use in class, please bring it along. Otherwise we will provide one.

Please note: The County Arts Lab has moved upstairs! Classes are now taking place in unit 2E of the Picton Armoury (Main Street level). The most convenient access is through the Main Street entrance, but you can also enter through the back/Mary Street entrance and use the interior stairs to reach the main floor (please note there is no elevator in the Armoury). There is one accessible parking spot at the corner of Main and Ross Streets across from The Regent Theatre.

Meet Angela! The middle child of five, Angela was often left to her own devices to entertain herself in her hometown of Prince Edward County, Ontario. From a very young age, much to her parents dismay, she would colour every surface she could get her hands on. Everything from paper to the furniture and walls. As her artistic talent was recognized by teachers, she learned to channel her desire to create into more appropriate materials and began her journey in pursuing a career as a professional artist.

In 2012 Angela graduated from the visual and Creative Arts Program at Sheridan College of Art and Design with honours, a silver medal and a 4.0 GPA. Prior to that she studied Art Fundamentals through distance education at AIS in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is currently furthering her education by taking the Mastery Program at Milan Art Institute in Athens, Georgia virtually.  She is also a member of the Prince Edward County Arts Council and has taught art lessons through the Baxter Centre for Arts in Bloomfield and out of her home studio in Picton.

Angela is a mixed media artist whose vibrant artwork is an expressive dance of colour and intricate line work. Her process begin with fast paced intuitive mark making and as she gets lost in creation, she slows her rhythm. The longer she paints, the more detailed her layers become. She has been classically trained to create movement using the colour temperature of oils, bringing her artwork and outstanding level of depth.

Each piece is completed with thousands of tiny dots using a script brush, drawing the viewer in and getting lost amidst the brushstrokes that each layer has to offer. Angela’s Prince Edward County art studio is in the lower level of the home that she and her carpenter husband, Jeremy Lavender, built together while they were engaged. Together they have two young boys, Henry (6) and Clifford (3). She is currently balancing painting and parenting in PEC and teaching Mixed Media at the County Arts Lab in Picton.

Art supply fee - Please note that the cost of supplies is not included in the course fee; this amount depends on the course, and will be automatically added to your total. If this cost is prohibitive for you, please contact Stacey at [email protected] before registering to make alternative arrangements.

Offline registration - We prefer to take payment and registration through this form, but if you are not comfortable with this option and it is more than 2 weeks before the course begins, please check the "Offline" box in the Billing Information section below. We will contact you with alternative payment options. Payment must be received at least one week before the course begins.

Processing fee - This covers transaction and ticketing fees. We've decided to use Regfox, the most affordable ticketing platform we could find, which will collectively save our participants over $1000 in processing fees per year.

Policies and Waivers - We've included these as part of the registration process (thank you for your patience!) to save some paperwork on your end and get straight to art making on day one!

  • We encourage those who are able to pay a little more to choose this price ($20/hr). By helping us subsidize the costs of offering a sliding scale fee system, you are helping build a community that prioritizes access to the arts for all. This price also allows us to cover more of our operating costs, which include Artist Instructor fees, rent, and more.

  • This price ($15/hr) allows us to cover most of the costs of running the course.

  • This price ($10/hr) is available to those who find the other two options too high for their household.
