YCA CERAMICS Still Life with Carolanne Bédard-Reid and Rebecca Heasman!

Our personal worlds change constantly – what will you decide is important to you in this moment in time that you’d like to remember in the next?

Still-life art has a long and rich history, starting as early as the Ancient Egyptians and touched by artists of major movements like Realism, Impressionism and Pop Art. This art form of depicting everyday objects has the power to capture a window of time in an artist;s life, what's important or symbolic to them, and how they perceive the world around them. Ceramics, also a craft rooter in profound histories, holds the versatility to create both functional and artistic objects. The results of combining the two art forms can yield a large range of artworks, from decorative to functional and from realistic to impressionistic.

In this course, participants will explore themes of symbolism and permanence through historic and contemporary examples of still-life art. They will observe the world around them to select a meaningful theme to apply a collection of works developed over six weeks. As in still-life art, possible themes include any inanimate objects or natural items like food, plants, or household items. The first module will focus on two-dimensional. painted cut-outs. In the second module, participants will create a large vessel, carving, extruding and painting the form inspired by their selected theme.

Still Life Ceramics starts November 13th and runs from 3:30-6pm on the following Thursdays: November 13, 20, 27, December 4, 11 and 18. Participants are invited to join us before the start of each session from 3-3:30pm for a snack in the new Arts & Crafts Library.

Meet Carolanne and Rebecca!

Carolanne Bédard-Reid is an artist & designer working with clay in Picton, Ontario. She explores mold-making, slipcasting, and wild clay processing. She was introduced to ceramics while completing her undergraduate degree in Environmental Design at OCAD University (B.Des, 2015) and has continued to explore the medium’s many facets since.
Her practice, Studio Carolanne, focuses on creating thoughtfully designed, long-lasting art objects that are both sculptural and functional. Through mold-making and slipcasting she is able to create a small-scale production of porcelain lighting. Carolanne shares much of her passion and process online while engaging audiences through encouragement, curiosity, respect, and inclusivity.

Rebecca Heasman is an artist creating work out of Toronto and Prince Edward County. She is a recent 2018 graduate of OCAD University, majoring in Printmaking with a strong focus on ceramics and screen-printing.
Rebecca strives to find related pathways between ceramics and print media, often creating through both mediums to convey alike concepts. As an artist, she takes interest in the relationships between humans and nature. Her art helps to cross the boundary of ‘them and us’ when relating the human condition and natural environments.
